Anacapa Island Kayak trip

July 5, 2011

Saturday July, 23rd

Join us on this exquisite journey.     We will travel across the channel in our own charted boat .  The sea life is thriving on this journey across the channel and we may even see some of the 28 species of whales and dolphins.   Once we arrive at the island we will start kayaking and  heading south, concentrating on some of the largest caves the island has to offer.  We will then kayak through the famous arch and visit the Northern Fur Seal rookery on the back side of the island.  Anacapa Island has the largest Brown Pelican Rookery in the United States.  A trip you won’t want to miss!  A trip you will never forget!

  Things you should bring;

  •  Warm cloths for the channel crossing, a change of cloths for the trip back,  and also cloths to kayak in, (wet suits work well if you have one).
  • Snacks for the kayaks as well as a hearty lunch.  This is a full day.  You will be able to keep food on the boat,  so a small cooler is OK.
  •  Bring lots of water and if you bring a camera, wrap it in a water proof bag or zip lock bag or 2.
  • We recommend bike gloves for your hands, a good hat and sunscreen_sun glasses as well.
  • Mask and snorkel if you want.

Cost for this day is $175 per person which includes chartered boat, Kayaks, paddles, life vest, helmets, and the best guides ever.  Please specify if you want a single or double kayak.  Space for this trip is limited and we will also need a deposit of $100 to reserve your spot.

Please be at the dock @ 8am for check-in and safety instructions.  We will depart @ 8:30am sharp, returning around 3:30pm.

Piedra Blanca Camp hike

May 29, 2011

Saturday June 4

Located in the Sespe Wilderness is where we find the Piedra Blanca’s and this will be our destination.

We will meet at Nordhoff High School parking lot at 9 AM and carpool  to the Piedra Blanca trail head. Once we cross the Sespe River we will head up and over the Piedra Blancas themselves, stopping to visit a small cave with the remains of a Chumash cave painting of a snake. Then we will head  down the Piedra Blanca Trail following the creek to a campsite where the Chumash Indians stayed for a time.  In the 1600’s a Spanish land grant was bestowed on this area  for cattle ranching and the remains of the  cattle corrals are still visible. The campsite is located in a shaded spot next to a river and there are Chumash paintings still visible today. We will have lunch here before turning back to take a small detour through the Piedra Blancas themselves.   This hike is rich in history and very scenic with views of Pine Mountain on one side and the backside of the Nordhoff Mountains on the other. The Piedra Blanca’s ( which means white rocks) was a playground for the Chumash Indian children and their family’s for hundreds of years.  It is a stunningly beautiful area.  We will seek and explore  many of the canyons and visit several Chumash cliff art sites. The total distance is approx 5 miles. This hike  is suitable for children as well dogs. The price for this hike is $20 per person_kid’s go free.

Matilija Falls

April 3, 2011

Sunday, July 22nd

img_0733 Please join us as we honor our friend David Bury and   Hike into the Matilija Canyon on our first annual David Bury Hike.   We will be hiking to the amazing water falls in the matilija canyon.  This senic trail takes us to  Swimming Holes and Majestic Water falls and follows the beautiful MatilijaCreek.  There are several creek crossings along with boulder hopping as we navigate this trail so you might want to bring along a pair of water shoes.   This time of year the temperature can unpredictable so dress in layers.   We categorized this hike as one of our NO WIMP HIKES.  This means, no kids or dogs, (really tough) unless they are hardy trail kids/ dogs.  (This time of year the sand and rocks heat up and can burn dogs feet.)  Please contact us if you have any questions concerning your ability to do this hike.  The approximate distance is 10 miles out and back.  Although this hike is challenging it is one you won’t want to miss.    Absolutely Beautiful!
